Observation Narrative
Plot location: Slope on south side of South Anna River, 0.4 miles SE of where it crosses Louisa/Hanover County line.
Plot is centered in a small patch of very mature mixed hardwoods, with individuals of Liriodendron tulipifera, Fagus grandifolia, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus rubra, and Q. muhlenbergii ranging between 59 and 92 cm DBH. Asimina triloba dominates a diverse shrub layer, while Maianthemum racemosum and Eurybia schreberi for large clonal patches in the herb layer. The presence of calciphilic species such as Quercus muhlenbergii, Staphylea trifolia, Asarum canadense, and Scutellaria nervosa (outside plot) suggest that soils may be influenced by local amphibolite intrusions (many are mapped in this immediate area).
Outside plot-Quercus rubra with a DBH of 91 cm.
